Waterfalls

As I was digging out my pond I threw the soil to one end to raise the ground and provide clearance for a waterfall. As the ground sloped somewhat up from here, I built up the level of the ground and added two higher waterfalls, and the sound is very refreshing on a still evening, a perfect place to relax, admire the view and muse on the infinite..

An easy way to make a waterfall is to buy a shallow, wide tub and use this for your reservoir. Arrange a group of rocks around it to hide the plastic, plant around it and make a chute that runs the water over the rocks, modelling in concrete the visible part of the chute to disguise it and to control how the water will cascade over the fall.

I built the three reservoirs in concrete and I'm still plugging the leaks, because I broke the first rule of concreting and impatiently built the concete ponds over the fresh fill rather than waiting for the earth to pack down.
However, this will be fixed with another application of concrete - but then I have ample water.

Of course, the upside of a leaky waterfall reservoir is that you get the perfect site for a watergarden beside the pond.
Plant it up with irises and other exotic things. Beautiful.

Now, these waterfalls have recently all changed, and I will be posting new photos and info soon.

The construction of the upper pools

I use a couple of small electric immersible pumps that run from the house wiring, via an isolating transformer and some wiring buried in a sealed conduit tube under the lawn.
You specify to your pump supplier the depth and span of water you want over the falls and he will have the pump for you. My pump cost me $400 and will last for years.

The intake for the pump needs a filter, else you'll have gutted fish floating inelegantly on the surface of your top pool if they stray near the pipe intake. Either construct a wire mesh fence around the pump in the pond and surround it with rocks (although this looks unsightly unless you explain to people you have a thing about atolls..)

A better idea is to site the pump reservoir away from the pond with a pipe connecting them. Place a cap drilled with suitable holes over the end of the intake pipe-end, being careful to not restrict your water flow too much.

A useful feature to install in the early stages is an efficient drain, so you can draw off the sludge that accumulates on the bottom if you find it is necessary.

Here's an effective design, which allows water to be drained from the bottom as required. Remember to keep the filters on the pipe-ends removable for maintenance.
